Rubbings

ZYPR Gallery is pleased to present Yechel Gagnon's new series of work entitled Rubbings. Known for using plywood as a medium, Gagnon extends carving into the realm of drawing by using frottage to transfer textures of the material and those created from her mechanical process into large-scale drawings. The eroded wood grain is rubbed and manipulated with graphite and charcoal transforming the wood pattern into strange pictorial spaces. These illusionary landscapes are ambiguous; their dimensionality haunting. The result is a series of monochromatic rubbings that evoke representational connotations despite the fact they originate from the anomalous carved plywood surfaces of Gagnon's earlier works.
